Abstract

In spite of existing legal regulations with regard to equal opportunities common in modern democracies, in 21st century Japan we still encounter several cases of discrimination against women, both in workplaces and in societal discourse. This study looks at the methods and ways applied by women to protest against the indefensibility and unfairness of the contemporary status-quo in male dominated Japanese society. A specific area of these protests is constituted by efforts to overwrite the traditional male – female dichotomies.
