Abstract
In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has captured the imagination of both the tech industry and the general public, often portrayed as a gateway to futuristic experiences that were once confined to science fiction. This paper delves into the current state and future potential of VR technology, aiming to discern whether VR is indeed a technology of the present or one that remains firmly in the realm of the future. The paper explores the multifaceted reasons behind the gap between VR’s potential and its actual adoption, including high hardware costs, limitations in user experience and the constrained scope of current applications. Through an extensive literature review, the study identifies key technological, economic and sociocultural barriers hindering the widespread adoption of VR. It also examines recent advancements, industry applications and user feedback to provide a detailed picture of VR’s present status.
