Abstract
Internationalization has become a strategic process in the Hungarian higher education institutions. The international student population of the University of Debrecen has increased to 4000 by the end of 2015. The Faculty of Economics provides three degree programmes in English, which attract students from all over the world. Competing in the global market requires a clear understanding of the motives, expectations and perceptions of the international students. The present study investigates the international students’ expectations concerning their university studies in Hungary, as well as their experiences at the university. The research indicates that the study experience of the international students is mostly positive at the Faculty of Economics, their expectations were exceeded concerning the social life at the university. The most important weakness identified by the students is the lack of English communication outside the classrooms.
