Abstract

Although the use of both the concepts of student and school well-being is widespread in the national and international literature, the differences in meaning are not always clear, and it is difficult to distinguish between them because these terms often appear interchangeably, even synonymously within the same study (Nagy, 2015). School plays a central role in the development of adolescents, as it serves as the main workplace for this age group, characterised by expectations similar to those of adults, such as tolerance of monotony, the importance of meeting deadlines and the emphasis on taking individual responsibility (Samdal et al). Like adults, adolescents are confronted with impressions and challenges that can cause them anxiety or stress and, as a consequence, affect their well-being at school, mostly in a negative way. School wellbeing not only plays an important role in current and future wellbeing and health (Bond et al., 2007; Samdal et al., 2004), but will also play a crucial role in later academic outcomes (Upadyaya and Salmela-Aro, 2013).
